    What's special

6,980SF of living on main floors. Spectacular circular stairwell off main entry. Massive front door matches internal Roman arches. Sliding wall to formal dining with silk-covered, curved ceiling. North entrance to hall tops a stairway from North driveway. West of the entry is billiards room with vaulted ceilings, a fireplace, full bath, with gold-leaf tile. Central staircase rotunda leads to the 60-foot long living room has large exposed-beams hand hewn/painted four sets of French doors, library, walk-in coat closet, guest bath, octagonal breakfast nook. Front courtyard and tea garden. Custom furniture manufacturer in 1928 to remain in the home today. Amazingly preserved the house retains original sconces and hanging light fixtures. Original bathroom fixtures and tile – colored motifs in five of the seven baths. 10 of the original 12 sinks remain original. Upgrades include four high efficiency gas furnaces and four modern heat-pumps. Fireplaces converted to natural gas and dampers installed when chimneys were rebuilt in 2014-2015. Root-cellar preserved from 1850 - an additional 1800 square feet of the basement finished to enclose a laundry, incinerator, and matching boilers connecting halls, drywells with sump-pumps storage pantries. 2-ton doors enclose three-car garage with mezzanine. A separate two-bedroom, two-bath servants quarters contained a kitchenette with access to the Butler’s Pantry and main kitchen. Within the main kitchen a dumb-waiter connected the up-stair’s kitchen which has separate servicing doors to two of the three vast 2nd-story bedrooms. The upstairs bedrooms each included walk-in cedar lined closets, sitting areas, exterior Juliette Balconies and ensuite baths, each containing both large bathtubs and large, circular showers. The main master has additional his-and hers closets, a built-in cedar-lined furs safe and a sperate entrance, accessed via an iron gated, exterior staircase. The original blueprints remain with the home. Four fireplaces were designed with specific characteristics and artisan metalworkers included screens and grates to match mantles. Two of the fireplaces – one in the library and one in the billiards room, were McAlister’s famous, Beehive design. Exposed, hand-hewn roof beams are hand painted throughout, as are original tiles and balconies and railings. Mahogany doors are attached with hand-hammered hinges and brass doorknobs. An internal phone system was partnered with servant buzzers throughout. The metal windows each incorporate metal insect screens, which rolled up into cylindrical tubes atop each window. Second owner was Louis Lachmund, president of the Capital Ice and Cold Storage Co., Salem Mayor in 1911, Oregon State Senator 1919-21. Third owners were prominent Real Estate Attorney Bernard Bednarz and his Philanthropist wife Miriam Bendarz. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It is of interest that for most of a century the home was mainly inhabited by the three consecutive widows of Jarman, Lachmund and Bednarz –
