The house at 5706 Southlake Drive as built by the late US Poet Laureate Randall Jarrell and his wife Mary von Schrader Jarrell. Randall Jarrell taught poetry and imaginative writing at the Women's College at UNCG for the last dozen years of his life, and was the author of 22 books including poetry, essay, literary criticism and several children's books illustrated by Maurice Sendak. Nearly all of the "artistic touches" in the house (stained glass, beveled and prism windows, decoratively tiled window seat, exterior iron-work and the fountain on the west side of the exterior), were either original features or incorporated by Jarrell's widow after his death in 1965. Current owners purchased the house from Mrs. Jarrell and have renovated to maintain its original character. If you read the first paragraph of the children's book Fly by Night, you will recognize it as directions to the house in the Greensboro, NC of the 1960s.Incredible property on acre plus lot in city.
