University / Hyde Park / Central $1,200 Vintage Austin Garage Apartment for Rent This is an old-time Austin garage apartment (in style more Ralph Kramden than Donald Trump) only five blocks from U.T. law / engineering school - - in a vintage residential neighborhood just north of campus. Walk to school. Bus line a block away. Bicycle to work downtown. Available immediately. It is NOT an apartment complex. There are NO AGENTS. I am not an agent and do NOT desire to be contacted by agents. I am the owner and live in the front house. All I need is an agreeable responsible human to rent the apartment at the back of my property on the alley. That's all. It is more of a "house" than an apartment, because it is a stand-alone structure. The single-unit apartment is on the second floor above the garage. Austin-speak, this is a "garage apartment." (In Highland Park it would be the "chauffeur's quarters." In Westlake Hills, it probably would be the "Boys' Annex.") Whatever you call it, the apartment dates from the 1930s, and is on an alley, behind a residence. It is close to East Woods Park, Hancock Golf Course, the Hyde Park restaurant and grocery scene, and just up the hill from the U.T. campus or St. David's Hospital. Two bedrooms (both very small), one bath. Separate living room, separate kitchen/breakfast area. Washer / dryer supplied in garage below the apartment. Hardwood floors. Water and waste water included in the rent price (that saves you money right there). Window air conditioners. Place has an updated full-size kitchen, but otherwise is pretty basic. It usually is inadequate for closet space. No kitchen pass-through bar, no built-in microwave, no walk-in closets, no double-sinks, no make-up lights, no bath tubs, no ceramic tile floors, no copper vent covers, no track lighting, no security system, no covered parking - - just a living room, two small bedrooms (one usually is used as a study), and a simple bathroom with shower, a toilet, and a porcelain sink on the wall. If that hits a nerve, please don't bother coming to look at it - - let's not waste our mutual time. What it is, though, is the best student or Austin slacker apartment of all time. Usually the tenants stay for years and years, and pass it on to friends when they graduate like an inheritance. The current guys are having to leave because one is going home to live with his father, and the other cannot afford it on his own. Bummer, because it is the best location EVER for U.T. students - - seconds from the law school or the engineering school. The place has been privately owned by my family since 1966. I and my children all have lived there at differing times. My first experience with the garage apartment was when I lived there while in U.T. in 1968: It is a terrific apartment for a single person. A couple also can live there if they are in love or very good friends. The rent is $1,200. Water and waste water is paid by me and is included in the price, so that's a $100 savings off-set right there. The renter pays electricity and gas. If you can Google you can find it yourself: 603 Harris Ave Austin, TX 78705. If you can't Google it, you probably are not a person who can live in Austin. Don't bother with trying to call me from California and asking to schedule an appointment in a couple of weeks to look at it. Good Austin places go fast. Attached are some pretty bad photos of the garage apartment that my son took with his telephone. You can drive by and see the place and call me if it looks interesting to you. It is a perfect hideaway for someone wanting a unique place redolent of Old Austin ambiance. Call me / do not email or text me. My name is John. I'm not nearly as cranky as I sound in this ad. Home: (512) 459-8938; Cell: (512) 909-5480. I am not an agent and not seeking agents. This garage apartment is behind my personal residence adjoining the University of Texas (5 blocks down the hill
