Returning from town we always anticipate with great joy arriving at the peaceful beauty of home, our private retreat. Our garden has been crafted in a woodland setting; in every direction the forest is incorporated into the landscape. Shrubs, grasses, and perennials share the property with a huge wisteria covered arbor and a stacked stone bench. The succession of seasons bring spring and summer bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The fall brings a blaze of color from maple, oak, and ash trees. Over the years we have built a succession of "sheds" -- a woodshed, a studio/sleeping shed, a garden shed, and a storage "tiny house". Our large cedar deck is a lovely place to enjoy the gardens and watch the quail on their evening walks. Inside, we are surrounded by wood and tile floors, custom oak cabinets, and windows everywhere that bring the outside in. A warm fire and a heat pump with three split-type outlets provide heat in the winter. Cross ventilation cools the house in summer, aided by an air conditioning option. Sitting in our dining nook is a perfect vantage point for the first snowfall of the year.. At night, stars appear in the high bedroom windows.
