This is a special little house. The house itself feels like it wants to be lived in by a future best-selling novelist. Or perhaps a world traveler with a rare sense of self-respect and humility. (The perfect base camp to return to affordable tranquility, and lighter social fare.) I would not say this house is fitting of a professional bowler, but I am open to being surprised. We are on what feels like an approachable bluff, with the town of Palouse resting, invitingly, a mere stone's throw below. To say you can walk to town easily, would be an under-promise. A child could make it in nine seconds. An elderly adult? Three minutes. Downtown Palouse includes a grocery store, post office, antique shops, a car dealer and decent mechanic. There is an iconic (arguably vital) tavern, where the comings and goings of the townsfolk, harken back to a common decency seldom found in modern towns. Most notable to me? The Green Frog Cafe. Good coffee. Great lunches, dinners. And a healthy serving of live music. All woven within a wonderful, if not outright rare, respectful and reverent atmosphere. So. The house? The living room and upstairs, was built in 1890. The kitchen, bathroom, laundry room and downstairs bedroom came later. (Perhaps the first owners required a soulful period of "testing the neighborhood" to deem it worthy of more rooms?) The ceilings downstairs are a healthy 9 feet. Upstairs, they are much more cozy, appealing to the nesting instincts of sleep lovers and late night readers. The wood floors downstairs are well worn and intentionally left natural. There is an entry/sun porch, which provides a perfect little nook for reading or casual conversation,or just gazing out over the peaceful neighborhood. The bathroom itself, is minimal and simple (it has never tried to be impressive). There is a natural gas heater in the living room. A pellet stove in the living room. And electric baseboard heaters in both the living room and bedrooms. The back yard has plenty of room for a garden. Perhaps even enough space for a cottage? An art studio? There is currently an intimate brick patio in the back, shaded by lilacs and other flowering bushes. It is a strangely comforting space. A perfect little hangout where friends and colleagues seem to gravitate, allowing their honest feelings to surface. (Is it the space itself? Not sure. But you'll see.) This house is ready for you to move in. Might be the perfect (affordable) place. You can see more photos at palousehouse.tumblr.com My name is David Wold. My number is (509) 288-2458.
