Neighborhood Description Neighborhood -- TUCKED AWAY IN SIERRA MADRE IS THE RUSTIC retreat known as the Lower Canyon. This enclave of bungalows, architectural gems nestles along a stream that wanders through the northeastern corner of this foothill town in the San Gabriel Mountains. The canyon was settled in the late 19th century by packers who learned of its charms while lugging observatory parts up the nearby Mount Wilson trail. Health seekers and vacationers arrived once the Pacific Red Car line reached Sierra Madre, the Big Bear of its day, in 1906. Turning onto Woodland Drive, you come upon Mary's Market. Its founder--lovely Mary Perkins--is no longer alive. but her spirit graces this cozy dispensary of groceries and gossip. From the store you descend the glen, skirting the 100-year-old river rock walls and zigzagging under a canopy of mottled green. WHO LIVES THERE: Artists, writers, families, and a few returning hippies (some of them now doctors and lawyers). KIND OF RECALLS: A miniature (and more accessible) Topanga Canyon. SCHOOLS: Sierra Madre Elementary School, Wilson Middle School, Maranatha High School. AMENITIES: Longtime jam makers E. Waldo Ward; the renovated downtown, which includes a post office, Taylor's Supermarket, and boutiques and restaurants that range from the homey to the elegant. Neither the new Cold Stone Creamery nor Starbucks has threatened the popularity of the local coffeehouse, Bean Town. TRADITIONS: None specific to the Lower Canyon, but Sierra Madre hosts an annual wisteria festival, the Mount Wilson trail race, a Fourth of July parade, and the lighting of the town Christmas tree. GREEN BELT: Above the entrance to Sturtevant Drive is a cute little park, but why go there when you can walk a few yards from your house and find grazing fawns? PLUS: With its low crime rate, volunteer fire department, and seemingly endless small-town lore, Sierra Madre has a familiar, almost familial feel. --Karen Wada of Los Angeles Magazine
