Griffin Enright Architects designed Rustic Canyon home. The property pays homage to the majestic 300 year old wandering sycamore that shades a small spring and lush slope in the back. The interior of the house is centered around a fireplace of stucco and rough stone, the living, dining and kitchen areas flow together effortlessly. Each area has a unique view of the ancient sycamore, thanks to sliding glass barn doors that are so generous – 10 feet by 10 feet – they had to be built on-site. The custom kitchen showcases a long stainless-steel island and hidden storage. A library sits between the living space and the master bedroom. Here, another wall of glass affords a closer perspective of the tree and frames a “floating” fireplace. Two solid walls of books flank the fireplace. The bedroom is more intimate, canopied by a pitched roof. A clerestory window adds light and a skylight offers view of the sycamore branches. The fireplace has been uniquely designed so that the angled flue intersects shelves of birch. The dappled light in the morning sunlight or glowing lantern-like at night is spectacular, like sitting under a tree in the forest.
