84 Main Street was built in the 18th century by John C. Coffing, one of the leading iron-industry businessmen. The current owners, noted designers and founders of WORKSTEAD have created a stunning in-town homestead utilizing the tones and materials reflecting their own personal vision of 'folk modernism' that pervades many of the objects collected in the home to date - objects that suggest a dialogue between elemental forms and tactile materials - much like the house itself. The home sits on a hill above a square, 2.5-acre parcel in the quaint town of Salisbury, CT. The landscape includes a formal English parterre 'knot garden' as well as a wild meadow, a vegetable garden, a 200-foot long 18th-century stone wall, a small greenhouse, a renovated carriage house, and numerous cedar out-buildings including a sauna. The interiors of the home itself benefit from large, 12-over-12 windows, so it feels connected to the outdoors and the privacy of the several-acre landscape outside. The majority of the WORKSTEAD power couple's design changes have been utilizing historic paints throughout the home, in many cases to match historic colors that already existed in the home, wallpapers, and furnishings.
