One of the original homes in the Western Reserve, The "Old Metcalf Farmhouse" as its referred to today, was completed in 1805. Built by some of the first of the "Yankee Migration", they came almost exclusively from Connecticut and Massachusetts. The house predates Lake County and Waite Hill itself! Behind today’s walls there are another set with the oil lamp shadows and the 1800’s wallpaper. The Metcalfs owned from Old Town Kirtland all the way to the estate. Many letters are kept at the Kirtland Library that detail the fascinating history of this farm, housing corn crops and bootleggers alike, with many iterations since. At the turn of the 20th century it becomes “The Spruces” due to the unique stand of Norway Spruces and the 200 yr old redwood planted by the Metcalfs, with a pine cone straight from the Redwood Forest! Most recently this remarkable place served as a Dressage Farm owned by Mary Dana Prescott. She named it Cloverfield. Whatever you call it, this property simply reminds one what life is all about.
