Paine, a well-known journalist and popular author, and his wife, Katharine, purchased Shankhassick Farm and completely rebuilt the main house. He raised both a family and a collection of cows, horses and chickens. My father was the eldest of his three sons and would become the managing editor and publisher of Fortune Magazine.
