1428 Huffman Avenue, also known as The Gummer House, is a historic manor, built in 1912. The home has been recognized as a historic landmark, and was added to The National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The home was originally built by prominent Dayton businessman Henry Burkhardt (1857-1918), as a wedding gift for his daughter Susan (Burkhardt) Gummer. Many of the materials used for the interior, such as the walnut wood trim/moulding/wainscoting (sourced from The Black Forest), tile, and other furnishings, were imported from Germany, Burkhardt's place of birth. There have been essential modern mechanical updates to the property, such as the addition of modern heating and air conditioning, as well as updates to the electrical and plumbing systems. However, much of the property's interior still maintains the original layout, flooring, fireplaces, woodwork, tile, and many fixtures, that have been preserved/restored, over 110 years.
