Built in 1895 the Kramer School started out as Little Rocks first brick and mortar school house. Housing all grades as an active school throughout much of its history. In 1905 the Little Rock High School that we now call Lofts at SoMa was built and the kramer school turned into a primary and middle school. In the 1920's when Central High School was built, and the city was growing, Kramer School middle school students moved into LR HS and the HS students moved to Central High School. Kramer School suffered the difficulties of integration in the 1950s and was left vacant for many years. Until well meaning developers totally restored the building in 1991 with the hopes of creating an artist colony. The artist colony survived a few years until the housing authority determined that artists alone can not be a protected class without protecting all qualified low income individuals for housing. Soon after, the ARK of Arkansas took over the management of the building. Unfortunately, the buildings improvement needs and upkeep requirements could not be met by tenant rents. Large tower had to be taken down because it was structurally unsound. All the granite that is around as seating came out of tower. Which makes it an all utilities paid, highly efficient building (except for internet but it is wired for Hyperleap). The two top apartments might be the jewels in Kramers crown with designer kitchens, ensuite bathrooms, 14 ft ceilings, skylights featuring the original roof lines.
