Middleton House is a beautifully restored 1890s Queen Anne–style townhome listed on the historic register in the heart of Natchez’s celebrated historic district. Built by prominent Natchez builder Robert Bost—whose work helped shape late-19th-century Natchez and included the famed Natchez Hotel—the home is a remarkable example of the craftsmanship and exuberant architecture of the era.
Its extraordinary five-color exterior may be its most recognizable feature. A full two-story gallery, walk-out windows, elaborate gingerbread, crown mouldings and intricately highlighted architectural details create an appearance visitors and passersby frequently compare to a Victorian dollhouse. In a city renowned for historic architecture, Middleton House has a character all its own.
The house also holds a special place in local history. For decades it was home to the Middleton School of Dance, where generations of Natchez children took lessons from Ms. Middleton. For many local families, the house is part of their own memories.
Inside are four bedrooms and 3½ baths, formal parlor and dining rooms, and a formal foyer with a Victorian staircase wrapping gracefully around the space. Connecting doors between the principal rooms can be opened for entertaining. Historic details include working transom windows, wainscoting, oversized cypress mouldings, trim and plinth blocks framing beautiful antique raw-cypress doors. Four historic coal-burning fireplaces remain as architectural features but have not been used or inspected by the current owners. An office/bonus room and whirlpool tubs add modern flexibility and comfort.
Middleton House recently underwent extensive renovation while preserving its historic character. Improvements include new electrical service and subpanels, updated plumbing and insulation, structural repairs and improvements, and fresh interior and exterior paint. Custom mouldings were fabricated on-site to reproduce the home's 1890s profiles, and its historic cornice gutters were rebuilt using modern materials and sealants for improved durability.
And then there is the location.
The Mississippi River bluffs, casino and historic Natchez Under-the-Hill are just three blocks away; the Natchez Convention Center and downtown auditoriums are one block away; and the farmers’ market is two blocks away. Some of Natchez’s best restaurants, bars, lounges, entertainment and antique shopping are only a block or two from your door, while many of the historic mansions featured during the Spring and Fall Pilgrimages are within easy walking distance.
The location is also ideal for entertaining guests or potential vacation-rental use. Pilgrimage visitors, convention guests, wedding parties, festivalgoers and weekend travelers can park the car and experience downtown Natchez on foot.
And if you're ready to trade the zero-turn mower for a golf cart—or a bass boat—the diminutive front yard may be one of Middleton House's most underrated amenities. You could practically maintain it with a weed eater and a pair of scissors.
Middleton House is a genuine piece of Natchez history where the river, restaurants, entertainment and architecture that make this city special are just outside your door.
This is a house for enjoying life in downtown Natchez, not spending your weekends doing endless yard work.

What the owner loves about this home
It's just such a well thought-out and pretty structure. It is so loved by the community, it was saved in the 80s from certain destruction by the historical society and with good reason. It is one-of-a-kind. It's close to everything going on in Natchez! There is always something to see and do whether it is sipping drinks with friends and singing along to music, or visiting the farmers market and doing some antique shopping, or going to an art exhibit or craft show, concert or touring historic homes-- meeting up with friends for all the fun is merely a 3 to 5 minute walk (or golf cart ride) away.
