The building envelope occupies the highest point in the center of a secluded sage basin—an exceptional location for a home with a lookout tower offering 360-degree binocular and spotting-scope views of the surrounding valley, hillsides, draws, and wildlife corridors. No other building envelope in the Territories offers this commanding position for observing wildlife throughout the basin. The Territories is one of Colorado’s hidden treasures: a protected, gated mountain setting where open space, privacy, and wildlife still define the land. From this natural observatory, an owner can watch mule deer, elk, bear, coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions, and other animals move through the valley. My connection to this country began in the 1970s, when I explored and photographed Colorado’s big-game wintering grounds by snowmobile. At that time, there was little human pressure and almost no access into what is now Cordillera. Squaw Creek Road extended only about a mile before ending, leaving this valley quiet, remote, and wild. The south-facing slopes have long provided ideal winter habitat, offering greater sun exposure, shallower snow, and easier access to forage. As Cordillera developed, controlled access helped preserve the peaceful, undisturbed character that has made this valley special for generations. I have photographed the mule deer and elk of the Territories for years. Several of those photographs are included to help convey what makes this location so rare.
