Built by a tile contractor to showcase his company’s skills, all the rooms on the main level have ceramic tile floors. The kitchen, and second floor bathrooms, have ceramic tile floors, walls & ceilings. The home is listed on the national register of historic places due to the quality of the tile work. The main level has an open floor plan with a central foyer flanked by the living and dining rooms. Large arched entries, cove ceilings, and rough texture plaster evoke a Mediterranean villa. An impressive wood burning fireplace, finished with Batchelder tile, anchors the living room. French doors in the living & dining rooms lead to the front porch. French doors in the sun room open to the rear porch. A swinging door in the dining room leads to the kitchen suite. The breakfast nook also has leaded glass windows. The mudroom exits to the side patio. A half bathroom sits between the breakfast nook & sun room. A grand staircase leads to the second floor. The bedroom sits between the nursery and bathroom, and has access to both. The bathroom features a spacious shower with rainfall shower head and six body spray jets. Leaded glass windows compliment the tiled surfaces. The nursery has been converted to a media room, and includes a 75” wall mounted smart TV. The third floor has a large main room and a half bathroom. Perfect for an office or extra bedroom. Unfinished storage areas flank the main room. What the owner loves about this home
I love the tile. The floors, walls, ceilings & roofs. The art has been built into the home & I never tire of looking at it. I love walking into the home – the foyer, living, and dining rooms. The openness & scale of the rooms, the cove ceilings, the rough plaster surfaces. The fireplace. I love the layout of the home. There are two ways into each room on the first & second floors. This allows walking through each room and the rooms adjacent to it - perfect for chasing, or being chased by, hysterical toddlers. These are some of my fondest memories of this home. I love the third floor. Looking out the window evokes the feeling of being in a tree house. I love the trees. In the yard, on the streets. One reason I was attracted to this neighborhood 35 years ago. Their beauty and size still inspires awe. I love the location. Being near Forest Park was another reason I was attracted to this neighborhood. In warmer weather, I still ride in Forest Park almost daily. I love the neighbors. They are warm & inclusive. Neighborhood gatherings are frequent. For many years our streets hosted a weekly volleyball game, the net tied between two street trees. I’m not the only person that loves this home. In the late 1970s and early 1980s the county wanted to demolish this home to widen Big Bend Boulevard. A group of neighbors fought the county and prevented that from happening. Previous owners of this home, & the original owner’s grand daughter, have visited the home since I have lived here because they loved it, too. I love this home so much, I’ve lived in it for over 35 years and would continue living in it if I wasn’t leaving Saint Louis.
