    What's special

THE DREADNAUGHT is a lifestyle on San Francisco Bay in one of Sausalito's classic and beautiful floating homes in a premiere deep water berth. Views south across the Bay to the towers of downtown San Francisco, Oakland, Angel Isle, Tiburon, and Strawberry. Even Mt. Tamalpais and the Coast Range from the upper deck. Forty foot boat dock! Access not only to the beautiful Bay Area, but to the Cities and thousands of miles of waterways inland! Built by a pediatrician and her retired naval officer husband for their family, the Dreadnaught was designed and built for fine living, gracious entertaining, and a fascinating lifestyle. On 3 levels 2180 Sq Ft. (owner), 2 Bdrm., one a lovely suite with views of the Bay to S. F. from the deck. Second Bdrm. and small sleeping loft. Gorgeous and spacious cooks kitchen, dining room with bar, music/reading room, separate office, wine storage, workshop, laundry, and ample storage in concrete barge. Hatch to spectacular roof deck with 360 degree views of the Bay Area!Floating homes ("houseboats") have a long history on San Francisco Bay. In the 1800s, the frantic period of "gold rush" San Francisco (SF), for many homes could be anything from a bed role on the bare ground to a tent, lean to, shanty, and some kind of frame built structure ranging up to the fine mansions that we can see to this day on the hills in "the City". In San Francisco and Oakland, and many other parts of the Bay they were also on the water. Anything big enough to roll out that bed role and stay dry might do. Possibly safer than on land!Commerce between the City and the interior was intense. Ranchers and miners and just everyday people in Sacramento, Stockton, and all the towns and rural areas needed tools, guns, processed foods, and all that SF could provide. On the way going inland there were even floating boarding homes on barges providing accommodations for the sailors and teamsters working on the scows and barges plying the channels.Little homes on wooden floating platforms appeared many of which were used as blinds for duck hunting in the Delta. They were also in the SF Bay area. At one time Belvedere lagoon had many of them that were weekend getaways and summer cabins. They're gone now, but a few are still homes to people in Sausalito's' houseboat community.WWII provided some unusual floating homes for the houseboat community. Subchasers, torpedo boats, minesweepers, and especially the landing craft used in the war in the pacific to land troops on island beaches like Guadal Canal, Tarawa, Guam, Okinawa, etc. Quite a few of these are still homes for people in the floating home community. But much as the lean to and shanty in the City shared the landscape with frame homes and mansions on Nob Hill, so too do floating homes. Our community still has little cottages on barges, landing craft, ferry boats, and a variety of styles and structures of homes.
